I don’t know why in recent years Hollywood has become obsessed with magicians and illusionist but within the last few years there has been a long string of such films in range of genres and this latest one is a Hollywood attempt at a comedy.

With a cast consisting of Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde and Jim Carrey you would expect the film to be hilarious and I was hoping it would be so. The problem however comes in that many of the actors appear to not be trying throughout their performances and the entire film feels half-assed and over-produced. It is the type of film which whilst having characters and a scenario that could be funny lacks actual jokes. Jim Carrey’s character – a new outrageous magician who pulls crazy stunts – is essentially a gimmick that supposed to be shocking.

The film to me sums up everything that’s wrong with Hollywood comedies at the moment. It is so incredibly formulaic and over-written that it cannot express itself and have any sort of true originality. Sure people will laugh and it probably performed decently in the box office but it just baffles me how this sort of film can be consistently produced.
