Somewhere In Time is a film I was recommended to watch primarily because of my love for David Leans classic Brief Encounter. I am not normally a fan of romantic films so was rather skeptical going into this film and found it to be almost exactly what I expected… but not in a bad way.

Somewhere in Time follows Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve), a successful playwright who after an encounter with an old woman finds himself drawn to a hotel. At the hotel he finds a photo of the old woman in the 1920’s and his love for her allows him to travel back in time; where he must show her that they are meant to be together.

The film is an extremely soppy romance film with lots of monologues about love and over-the-top music; however there are moments of brilliance within the film; particularly the use of time-travel. Rather than use a time-machine the characters use hypnosis to travel back in time – something which I hadn’t seen before and found to be extremely interesting. The film also has an extremely heartbreaking and ambiguous ending which raises a lot of questions adding to the mystery of the film.

For what the film is, it is thoroughly enjoyable and I can understand why it has gathered something of a cult following as it has many moments of genius filmmaking and storytelling… it’s just let down by a disproportionate about of soppiness and talk of ‘destiny’.
